More security cameras to watch over city centre

An extra four surveillance cameras will soon be installed to watch over Mount Gambier's city centre.

The city council last night approved a $72,000 expansion of the closed circuit camera system.

New cameras will be placed near each of the city's two 24-hour service stations, another one on Helen Street, with the city's eighth camera location to be decided.

Councillor Merv White says the cameras have strong support, but he is disappointed expansion is necessary.

"I know it's a thing that's been very successful, but to spend $70,000 on some more is a lot of money and I do support the cameras, but it's a sign of the times that we have to do this ... it's a bit of an implication on the community that we have to have cameras down the main street," he said.
