Three watch-houses in Aboriginal communities in central and north Queensland will be among the first to have CCTV facilities upgraded.

The Police Minister, Judy Spence, says the upgrade at Palm Island, off Townsville, Woorabinda, west of Rockhampton, and Aurukun, on Cape york Peninsula, follow the death of Mulrunji Doomadgee at the Palm Island watch-house in 2004.

She says a tender has now been awarded to carry out the work and it should be finished by next month.

"Then of course we've got the other 18 or so Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community police stations to do after that," she said.

"They're at the moment being assessed by a panel and we will keep doing these upgrades for the next 12 months."
