IF YOU are thinking about causing trouble in or around a taxi this party season, be prepared to smile for a security camera.

In the lead-up to peak cab season, Queensland Transport has issued a warning to people caught misbehaving in the back, front or the outside of a taxi.

Transport Minister John Mickel said taxis in urban centres throughout the state had security cameras fitted to record everyone in or near a cab.

As part of a State Government $8.75 million two-year plan, 3092 of Queensland’s taxis have been fitted with security cameras.

"During the festive season there is an increase in criminal behaviour involving taxis, mostly from young people affected by alcohol," Mickel said.

"This year, it’s different because every incident will be caught on camera and the perpetrators caught and brought to justice."

Since the security plan started two years ago, Mickel said police had used images to help in 500 investigations.

"People tend to behave badly when they think they’re invisible. Well, having a security camera in the cab means if you misbehave there will be a record of it," Taxi Council Queensland chief executive officer Blair Davies said.

Warning posters and other campaign material is being distributed around pubs, clubs and busy taxi ranks.
