Police are being equipped with tiny cameras as part of a festive crackdown on crime.

Officers on patrol in Lincoln will attach the devices to their body armour and wear compact video recorders on their belts.

Evidence caught with the cameras, which can also record sound, is admissible as evidence in court.

And police hope the devices will also act as a visual deterrent to would-be troublemakers.

Lincolnshire Police officers will be trying out equipment made by six different manufacturers from this weekend to the New Year.

The force was success in its bid for £55,000 for the scheme which is being tried out in Lincoln before being rolled out across the county.

Inspector Phil Vickers said that the overall aim was to ensure revellers could enjoy themselves without fear of violence.

"People planning to go out in the city over the seasonal period should feel more reassured that they can have a fun night out without getting caught up in any trouble as a result of this new initiative," he said.

Scaffolder Daryl Sleight (28), of Carlton Boulevard, Lincoln, said he thought the cameras would be a great deterrent.

"If it helps stop thugs carrying out violent attacks then I think it's a great idea," he said. "It will help make the city centre much safer at night."
