More cameras watch city

CENTRAL Melbourne will get another 29 security cameras to watch over crime hotspots under a plan to be considered by councillors tonight.

The cameras will be installed to monitor sites of growing street violence that now have little or no video surveillance.

A motion has been put for the council to pay $1.1 million installation after a funds stand-off with the State Government.

Cr Peter Clarke said it was time for the council to get on with the job.

"The community is not interested in political fights. They're into finding a solution to the problem," Cr Clarke said.

Premier John Brumby has resisted funding requests, saying it was a council matter.

Cr Clarke said council should pay upfront costs then share with the state the $1.4 million cost to operate the network.

"Community safety is paramount here," he said.

The central Melbourne plan proposes saturating the area south of the Yarra including Southbank Promenade, City Rd and Alexandra Ave.

Three cameras are proposed for Queen St, which has become the new centre of night-time revelry but has no cameras now.

Other sites to receive the cameras are Spencer St, Exhibition St, parts of Lonsdale St, Docklands, the western end of Flinders St and Northbank.

Planning committee chairwoman Catherine Ng said the Government should help fund the running costs of surveillance.

"Every night we put across the images to the emergency operations centre and they use it, so if you use it, you should pay for it," Cr Ng said.

The move came as a police sweep of unruly city pub and club patrons led to 57 people being hit with banning notices in just over a month under new laws, after being caught for assault, offensive or obscene behaviour and drunkenness.

Most were banned from licensed venues and other designated areas in the CBD as part of work by the Safe Streets Taskforce.

Police also said "numerous" pubs and clubs had been issued with penalty notices for serving intoxicated people and allowing drunks on to premises.
