Attacked taxi driver calls for cameras

Date: 28/2/08

Taxi DriverA TAXI driver who was racially abused, choked and robbed by three passengers in a pre-meditated attack has called for security cameras to be installed in all Victorian cabs.

Gurprit Singh, 22, picked up the group from a street corner in Gisborne about 7pm on Tuesday after they called Crown Cabs requesting he be their driver.

During the trip to Macedon the men began racially abusing Mr Singh and acting aggressively.

"They were asking where I was from and saying that I should go home," Mr Singh said.

"I looked in the rear mirror and noticed one of them was putting on gloves."

Fearing he was about to be attacked by the men, Mr Singh pulled over in Grammar Rd, Macedon, and told them to get out.

"When the car stopped I felt something choking on my neck with a rope and someone was hitting me on the face," he said.

"They said to me 'Give us all you've got' so I handed over all the money and they warned me not to call the police, otherwise they'd kill me."

Mr Singh said he feared for his life.

"It all happened in seconds, my first intention was just to save my life," he said. "They are cowards, all of them."

He believes in-car surveillance cameras would have deterred the men.

Cameras are mandatory in metropolitan taxis but not in regional areas.

"It certainly would not have happened (if there were cameras in the car)," Mr Singh said.

"We need the cameras more than in the metropolitan areas. It's put me off driving, it's put a lot of taxi drivers off."

Police believe the three men ran to a waiting white sedan, driven by a fourth person.

The men are described as Caucasian, in their 20s, with crew cuts. One spoke with a British accent.
