The Northern Territory's Transport Minister wants the NT Taxi Council to put in a formal request to her department for CCTV (closed circuit television) cameras to be installed in cabs.

Delia Lawrie met with the Taxi Council today to discuss ways to improve driver safety after reports this week that rock-throwing attacks had reached crisis point.

Ms Lawrie says installing security cameras in cabs will go a long way to catching those responsible for the crime.

"They certainly indicated that they as a council would be prepared to formally request CCTV cameras in taxis," she said.

"So I was pleased with that, I'm actually a big fan of, advocate of, CCTV in terms of a security measure.

"We've put CCTV in our bus network, we've got them in our bus interchanges. They are an effective security tool."
