The Lord Mayor of Hobart, Rob Valentine, believes closed-circuit cameras on the waterfront will be effective in identifying trouble-makers.

Cameras are being progressively installed to help curb anti-social behaviour in the Sullivans Cove area.

The locations were revealed in last week's press leading to speculation that louts will dodge the cameras.

Alderman Valentine says police believe louts are unlikely to think about camera locations when committing their offences, and the cameras will help to track them down.

"Obviously when people are inebriated and they're the ones that may indeed be causing a lot of the hassle they don't really stop to think whether or not the cameras are there most of the time," Alderman Valentine said.

"But I think over a period of time people do become more conscious of the fact that footage may be taken and identify them if they're doing the wrong thing," he said
