Cricket fans will dob in yobs with text messages

Cricket yobs CCTVCRICKET fans angry at zealous SCG security will soon have more to fear: fellow fans dobbing them in via a text message to the security guards.

Cricket Australia has tested the service - under which fans at a ground send a text message to complain about other fans - at a match in Brisbane. It plans to implement the scheme nationally, Cricket Australia's public affairs manager, Peter Young, said.

"We are very keen on the idea … if not this year then for next season," Mr Young said.

But the phone service, introduced into the US National Football League last year, has already been dubbed the Rat Line by American football fans, USA Today said.

"It's too much like Big Brother," an Oakland Raiders fan, Sean Martin, said. "It's just another step in the NFL taking the personality away from the game."

Mr Martin said the NFL's attempt to control normal, rowdy behaviour reinforced the impression it was now the "No Fun League".

The comment echoes the "fun police" moniker given to security staff at the Test match between Australia and South Africa at the SCG this week.

Cricket fans complained of overbearing security guards quashing attempts to create a fun atmosphere. The Herald reported that fans at the SCG felt they were being closely watched all day.

Under the proposal, the phone number to receive the text messages will be posted at the ground only on match day to limit prank calls, Mr Young said.

"The CCTV footage is now so extensive that there's nowhere to hide, and if the call comes in from a fan, security can then use the CCTV to have a look at what that caller is complaining about.

"If it's a legitimate call they turn up quickly."

All but three of the NFL's 32 teams have implemented the scheme. Since the start of the NFL season in September, fans have sent more than 1000 text messages, the NFL's security director, Jeffrey Miller, said.

"If there's someone around you who is just really ruining your day, now you don't have to sit there in silence," Mr Miller said.
